There are two commonly told stories about the name “Trawangan.” One links it to the Sasak word “Terangang,” associated with turtles laying eggs; another connects it to “Terowongan,” meaning tunnel. Local stories also describe the island being used for different purposes during periods of Lombok’s history, including as a lookout point during the Japanese occupation. European backpackers began discovering Gili Trawangan more widely in the 1970s and 1980s.
